Hopefully it's still the incomparable experience that it was when I attended!

BetsyB.S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08724883690591213622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115433326707838301.post-38016889627789238462011-06-23T08:48:50.563-07:002011-06-23T08:48:50.563-07:00Julia, your high school shoot-out was more like Be...Julia, your high school shoot-out was more like Berlin's than mine was, because you did it in front of the entire orchestra! I have never had that experience. It probably toughened you up for your career as a professional horn player!

BetsyB.S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08724883690591213622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115433326707838301.post-64839416264871465062011-06-23T06:28:24.554-07:002011-06-23T06:28:24.554-07:00That's really interesting. I'd heard from a few people that the Berlin Philharmonic has a unique auditioning procedure, but no one ever really specified what made it unique.

I went to the School of Orchestral Studies four and five years ago on bassoon, and it wasn't nearly as intense. They did the standard process of going into a small room with a panel and having us play about five minutes of music in total (chunk of a solo and an excerpt or two).Judithnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115433326707838301.post-33532897248634949502011-06-23T05:01:41.087-07:002011-06-23T05:01:41.087-07:00When I was in the Greater Twin Cities' Youth S...When I was in the Greater Twin Cities' Youth Symphonies (MN) in high school, we had a horn section shoot-out on the horn solos in the last movement of Dvorak 9. All 8 of us in the section at that time were tested in front of the entire orchestra during one of the rehearsals. It ended up being a tie between me and another player, so we split the solo during the performance. Not exactly the experience I would put a high school student through if I was a conductor. Though it was a very long time ago, that experience still traumatizes me to this day!Juliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18164262681029937091noreply@blogger.com
